The St. Pius X junior varsity
softball team captured the consolation bracket championship
Monday afternoon after an exciting weekend of tournament games.
The team had its share of ups and downs during the season but
came together Saturday morning to defeat Nativity in the first
round of tournament play in Arvada. Key hits and a strong
defense supported an outstanding pitching performance by
Stephanie Delgado, which earned her the game ball. St. Pius went
on to defeat All Souls late Saturday afternoon. This victory
earned St. Pius the chance to play St. Anne on Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs scored most of their runs in the early innings and
held off a late charge by St. Anne to win the game. This set the
stage for Monday's championship game, a rematch with Nativity.
The first two innings were scoreless as each team settled into
the game. Jenny Evans led off the top of the third inning with a
walk. Erika Ortiz advanced her to second with a sacrifice ground
ball. Grace Marriott then moved Jenny to third with another
sacrifice ground ball. Stephanie Delgado and Paris McManus
earned walks to load the bases. Alayna Moisse came through with
a 2 out single that allowed Jenny and Stephanie to score the
first two runs of the game. St. Pius failed to advance the
remaining runners. Both teams were scoreless in the 4th inning.
Stephanie Delgado's home run in the top of the fifth added a
much-needed cushion. Nativity led off the bottom of the fifth
with two walks followed by two strikeouts. Another walk loaded
the bases but Stephanie Delgado struck out the last batter to
end the game.
Congratulations to Coaches Evans, Witkowski, Delgado, and
Marriott and to their amazing players: Grace Marriott, Erika
Ortiz, Stehpanie Delgado, Jackie Mock, Alayna Moisse, Shaunie
Housden, Taylor Maes, Meaghan Witkowski, Paris McManus, Gracie
Eshelman, Jenny Evans and Peaches Herrera. You girls are
awesome and we are so proud of you – on and off the field! |
